Overview

The General and Thoracic Surgery Division at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center provides comprehensive general and specialized surgical treatment of a wide range of congenital (existing at birth) and acquired conditions affecting children from birth through young adulthood. These include common conditions such as appendicitis and hernias, as well as rare or complex conditions such as solid tumors, multiple congenital anomalies and anorectal malformations.

Surgeons in the division play a key role in the Cincinnati Children's multidisciplinary kidney, liver and small bowel transplantation programs. Additionally, they offer:

Surgeon-in-Chief, Richard G. Azizkhan, MD, heads the division. The surgical team is made up of:

  • Thirteen board-certified pediatric surgeons
  • Cadre of surgical and pediatric physician trainees
  • Nurse practitioners skilled in pre- and postoperative surgical care

The General and Thoracic Surgery Division also plays a key role in a number of interdisciplinary programs and services that involve highly specialized training and expertise.

24-Hour Coverage

The team provides 24-hour coverage and can be promptly contacted for surgical consultation and care. Close collaboration is maintained with pediatricians, family physicians, pediatric subspecialists and a network of pediatric home-care providers.
