Remembering a Loved One
Mary Louise Tecklenburg
Children age 5 and under who come for a well-child visit in the Pediatric Primary Care (PPC) Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center go home with a new, age-appropriate book. The PPC introduced the Reach Out and Read program in 1998 to encourage language development and help prepare children to be successful in learning to read. Reach Out and Read gets annual financial support from Mary Louise Tecklenburg, who also made a special gift to help the PPC commission art to support the program. Thanks to her gift, when the PPC moved into its home in the new Location A building in fall 2002, it featured a colorful reading tree and paintings of story book characters in every exam room. And while they wait to see the doctor, children can sit and read under the shade of a three-dimensional Tree of Knowledge in "Margaret's Place," a reading nook named in honor of Mrs. Tecklenburg's mother.
