James M. Ewell: An Extraordinary Friend

Jim Ewell was an extraordinary friend of the medical center

"Jim Ewell was an extraordinary friend of the medical center, committed to its mission and always generous with his time, good judgment and resources. The constancy of his support and the wisdom of his advice will be missed."

James M. Anderson,
President and CEO

When James M. Ewell passed away this year, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center lost an extraordinary friend and visionary leader. Through 44 years of service as a trustee, he shared his wisdom and business savvy, his time and financial resources to improve health care services for children.

As president of the board of trustees from 1966 to 1978, Jim Ewell helped shape the future of pediatric care in our community. He presided over the complex negotiations that brought six independent child health care organizations into affiliation with The Children's Hospital and its Research Foundation to form one comprehensive center to better serve our patients and their families.

Later he took on a new leadership role on the board, overseeing all major new construction projects from 1988 to 2003. During those years, a period of dramatic growth on our main campus, Cincinnati Children's added more than 300,000 square feet for research and built two new hospital buildings, two new garages and the Sabin Education Center.

Throughout his long association with Cincinnati Children's, Jim gave generously to support our mission. Upon his death, he left a $2 million contribution through his estate. In his memory, the board of trustees has established the James M. Ewell Chair of Pediatric Research. This chair is currently held by Thomas Boat, MD, director of the Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation.
