Gerber Foundation
The Gerber Foundation is partnering with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center to help our most vulnerable babies have a chance at life. In 2004, The Gerber Foundation, whose mission is to enhance the quality of life of infants and children, awarded more than $450,000 to support a team of researchers studying necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), the most common and deadliest intestinal disorder in premature infants.
NEC affects up to 4,000 newborns a year. Only about half of all low birth weight newborns with NEC survive. Many survivors are left with lifelong disabilities. Cincinnati Children's is a premier center for treatment of NEC and research to prevent it. Our neonatologists are studying medications that may prevent the condition in pre-term infants. And they are studying ways to predict who is at risk for developing the disease, so doctors can target prevention efforts to those at greatest risk.
These studies offer hope for a healthier future for thousands of newborns every year.
