Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America
Thanks to Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center will be able to expand the successful Youth Injury Prevention (YIP) program to serve our region's rapidly growing Hispanic community.
Cincinnati Children's launched YIP in 1999 in response to the disproportionately high rate of preventable auto-related and other unintentional injuries among African-American children. In partnership with African-American churches and their ministers, YIP developed a unique curriculum to promote injury prevention through:
- Sunday school classes
- Sermons
- A gospel play
- Other faith-based activities
Now, YIP is expanding to reach Hispanic families. Hispanic children are second only to African-American children in the death rate from motor vehicle crashes.
In its first year, the YIP Hispanic Initiative will conduct focus groups to identify cultural barriers and plan the best way to deliver a targeted injury prevention message. Toyota's generous three-year, $225,000 commitment gives the new program time to do the needed research and development to implement a culturally relevant curriculum that will make a difference for Hispanic children.
