Daniel Conway, just back from vacation, looked the picture of health. An athletic 12-year-old, he was tall, slender and tan from a week of playing outdoors. So when he complained of a bellyache, his mother thought it was just the result of eating too much junk food while he was away from home. But the stomachache persisted, so she took Daniel to the doctor. Blood tests led to a diagnosis that shocked his family—acute promyelocytic leukemia, a rare type of leukemia. It was like a freight train had hit them, his mother recalls.

Today Daniel is healthy and active. He passed his driver's test this summer, is playing football with his high school team and is looking forward to hockey season.
