Family Advisory Council Award of Excellence in Family-Centered Care
Recognizing Health Care Professionals and Family Members
Who Exemplify Family-Centered Care
The Family Advisory Council at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center established the "Family Advisory Council Award of Excellence in Family-Centered Care" to recognize health care professionals and family members who have gone above and beyond to promote family-centered care within the Cincinnati Children's community.
How Nominees Are Honored
Three awards will be given per year -- one staff member, one family member, and one team or department. The winners are selected by families, who we believe are best able to recognize excellent family-centered care. The Family Advisory Council hosts an awards ceremony in a reception that honors the winners and thanks the many family members who donate their time to help Cincinnati Children's serve families better.
The ceremony for the Family Advisory Council Award of Excellence in Family-Centered Care was postponed until spring 2010 due to the H1N1 outbreak. The event will be held on the main campus of Cincinnati Children's, in the Sabin Auditorium (across the hall from the cafeteria). The date and time are yet to be announced.
Criteria by Which Candidates Are Judged
Family-Centered Care is a way of practicing medicine that involves families as equal partners in the care of their child. The Cincinnati Children's Family Advisory Council seeks to honor families, hospital staff members, and teams of people who work together, bridge gaps, and cross disciplines to deliver the best quality and experience of care. Family Advisory Council members, including parents, patients, and other family members, selects the winners based on how well they demonstrate the core concepts of family-centered care:
- Dignity and Respect: Makes an effort to listen to every team member's point of view and honor their background, values, and choices.
- Information Sharing: Gives complete and timely information that help the team (including the patient and family) make the best choice for the patient.
- Participation: Encourages patients and families to participate in their care and decision-making at the level they choose.
- Collaboration: Includes patients and families on an institution-wide basis. Health care leaders collaborate with patients and families in policy and program development, implementation, and evaluation; in health care facility design; and in professional education, as well as in the delivery of care.
