"Being a parent of a chronically ill child is something we are thrown into and can never be prepared for," said Janet Wimberg, who joined the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Family Advisory Council during April 2006.
Janet's son Kyle was diagnosed with tyrosinemia, a rare condition. In his young life, he has already had two liver transplants.
"We have to focus on a way to teach parents their new role. I wanted to help Cincinnati Children's provide the best care possible to all individuals," Janet said.
"When a health care professional listens to you, it gives you a feeling of confidence in that professional and strengthens the relationship," Janet said.
"I hope to help set up better networking techniques for parents of patients," Janet said. "I have many ideas at this time, and I just need help and direction in structuring those ideas -- ideas that I feel as a parent I can present in a different perspective than a clinical person."
