"The Family Advisory Council reinforces the commitment Children's has made to family-centered care. It provides real-time, family-focused input into decisions being made across the institution, and it is a place with focused energy, enthusiasm, and great concern for the care and welfare of children and their families." – Jill Hofmans

In 2008, Jill Hofmans joined the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Family Advisory Council. Jill and her husband Duncan Currie have two children, Sam and Sally. "My daughter ice skates and takes tumbling. She wants nothing more than to be a movie star one day," Jill said. "Sam would like to be a volcano."

Sam has short bowel syndrome and as a central IV line and a g-tube, Jill said. The Hofmans-Currie family has been patients in:

"Unhappy with our son's care, we researched several institutions in North America and consulted with five of them. We chose Cincinnati Children's -- specifically Dr. Sam Kocoshis and Gerry Hennies, RN -- and moved over 2,000 miles away from our family and friends because it was the best thing to do for our son. We have never looked back," Jill said.

"My experiences with my son in this medical facility provide me with firsthand knowledge of numerous divisions, departments, and specialties, outpatient satellites, dental services, and of course, billing and collections," Jill said.

Jill joined the Family Advisory Council because she wanted to be part of improving family-centered care at Cincinnati Children's. "I know what families need and want to facilitate the changes necessary to help them better experience their time at Children's," she said.

As a member of the Family Advisory Council Education Subcommittee, Jill hopes to find creative ways to increase opportunities for resident education. "I really want to walk away from my tenure on the council knowing I helped residents understand the special care and attention families need when their child is ill." She has a background in adult continuing medical education so is comfortable interacting with people from all areas and all levels at Cincinnati Children's.
