Family Advisory Council member John Reder.

John Reder is a lead systems analyst in the Applications Development Group of the Information Systems Department at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, where he has worked since 1997 as a software developer. John joined the Family Advisory Council in April 2006.

"I have been involved in the development of the Patient Chronic Care Portals and many internal systems, including Discharge Summary System, Outpatient Clinic Notes System, Unified Physicians Information Repository, Online Growth Chart Plotter and the Online Policies and Procedures System," John said. "I also helped design and build the original Cincinnati Children's Intranet site (CHMCOnline). "

When asked why he joined the Family Advisory Council, John said, "Ever since I started working for Cincinnati Children's I have always been looking for ways to be directly involved in helping the hospital deliver quality service to patients and their families.

"I love to creatively solve problems and build solutions that truly help," John said. "As an employee, I consider myself very lucky to be paid for doing something that I really love and would gladly do for free!

"Aside from taking pride in seeing Cincinnati Children's grow and evolve into something we can all be proud of, I have another force that drives me to try even harder ... my children," John said.

"My daughter Lauren (9) has Cerebral Palsy and has been coming to Children's for most of her life. My son Alec (4) also has had a few surgeries at Cincinnati Children's. He continues to come here for follow-up visits," John said. "My experiences as a parent and an employee are my key drivers for continuing in my mission to truly make a difference."

John said he hopes his experience as a software developer will be useful with his role on the Family Advisory Council.

"With the selection and implementation of new core hospital systems, I think it's beneficial to have someone from Information Services (who happens to be very familiar with software development and design) to be involved in the Family Advisory Council," John said.

"I could work through the Family Council and my position in Information Systems to champion their focus on family-centered care within the design and implementation of these new systems, as well as other systems development initiatives," John said.

"As one of the software developers working on many systems used to deliver patient care -- including the Patient Chronic Care Portals -- I'm here to listen and learn from the experiences of participating families," John said. "I want to take what I have learned and incorporate it into the design of current and future systems we develop."

John said, "I would like to contribute any information I can, both related to my job and experiences as an employee and my perspective as a parent. I'm hoping to take what I learn from Family Advisory Council members and apply it to generating creative solutions in areas where I can have a direct impact," John said.

"I believe I can communicate in simple terms very complex issues," John said. "I can pull upon my experiences as a parent and an employee. I have a pretty good sense of humor and always manage to find a way to make people laugh."
