During April 2006, Joy Benett became co-chair and parent coordinator of the Family Advisory Council at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
Joy Bennett and her husband Scott were the first parent-couple members to serve on the Family Advisory Council at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Joy and Scott both volunteered for the Family Advisory Council from April 2004 through March 2006.
In April 2006, Scott stepped down to serve as a parent advisor on the Liberty Township Site Planning Committee, and Joy began working as the parent coordinator for the Family Advisory Council.
Their daughter Elli has been a heart patient at Cincinnati Children's since February 2000.
"Elli is 6 years old and has a very complex medical history," Joy said. "We came in through Emergency and spent several weeks in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit / CICU and Cardiac Stepdown," Joy said. "In fact, we were in stepdown so long we brought our own airbed to sleep on!"
"Since then, Elli has had four open-heart surgeries and multiple minor procedures. She most likely faces at least one more open-heart surgery," Joy explained. "We have been seen by Neurology; Neurosurgery; Genetics; Cardiology; Audiology; Ophthalmology; ENT; Feeding Team; Occupational / Physical Therapy; Speech Pathology; Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery; Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics; Pediatric Rehabilitation; Orthopaedic Surgery; Gasterenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition; the Aaron W. Perlman Center for Children; DME and Home Health Care."
Joy said she applied to be parent coordinator for the Family Advisory Council because "Cincinnati Children's has come so far since we first walked through the doors in 2000. I'm excited to be a part of further improvements in the way it delivers the best family and patient experiences."
Joy hopes to "improve family-centered care by defining the best patient and family experience and guiding the hospital in delivering that best experience consistently throughout the organization. Once of the most important ways to deliver the best experience is to communicate clearly, both between care providers and families and between health care teams," Joy said.
Joy is a member of the Family Advisory Council's Tobacco-Free Initiative Subcommittee.
A freelance writer by profession and a mother of three, Joy enjoys gardening, knitting, blogging, reading and cooking during her leisure time.
