During April 2006, Pharmacy Medication Safety Officer Judy Knapp, RPh, became a member of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Family Advisory Council.
"I joined the Family Advisory Council to try to make a difference in the view of families to those who practice pharmacy," Judy said. "I also wanted to get a better picture of what family members encounter at Cincinnati Children's that I personally do not witness. I hope to learn and take that knowledge to make the medical experience a safe one for the families."
Judy said her role as a Family Advisory Council member who is an employee involved directly with medication safety, her intent is to "learn from the families so we can set up systems where deemed necessary to safeguard all patients."
Judy feels her experience as a parent, as well as a pediatric pharmacist with experience in patient and professional education, will be an asset to the Family Advisory Council.
"Family-centered care, with rounding as a team with medical, nursing, other disciplines and family has increased my knowledge and made me a better-rounded professional," Judy said.
"I have a practical approach to dealing with most issues and try to streamline and create organized systems," Judy said. "I see working with families as a way to sometimes use my skills to think 'outside the box' and review all aspects of an issue and come up with a plan for better medical care that will work for the caregiver, the hospital and child."
