Lisa Berry-Hughes joined the Family Advisory Council at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center during April 2006. Her family has been coming to Cincinnati Children's for more than 13 years.

"I hope I can be a voice for the parents and children in the Sickle Cell (Hematology) Division and also be of use to Cincinnati Children's and the community to bridge some of the gaps which exist in providing quality and cultural competent care," Lisa said. "I am a parent, a sister, an aunt and an advocate, and I hope to use all of my facets of life experiences to the Family Advisory Council to help Cincinnati Children's be the world's best hospital."

"My goal is to be open-minded and willing to do what is necessary to provide answers to help families I come in contact with by creating a bond between the families and the advisory council," Lisa said. "I hope to make a difference by showing patients and family members this hospital does care and seek to make the most of their visits when here."

Lisa has been a member of the Sickle Cell Parent and Family Network for more than 11 years, volunteering as the New Parent Liaison. Lisa is an active Family Advisory Council member and has been a member of the council's Tobacco-free Initiative Subcommittee at Cincinnati Children's.

"I just got started as a new member, but I am already getting new people calling me with questions and concerns which inspires me to learn more about Cincinnati Children's so I can get answers for families," Lisa said.

I have been on many councils (Family and Children's First, Early Intervention Collaborative, Every Child Succeeds, BCHM, Sickle Cell Parent Family Network, Foster Parenting, SIDS Group)," Lisa said.

"One thing I've learned is if you are willing to share your life experiences, be open to others and honest with all that you do, you are guaranteed to gain something," Lisa said.
