Overview

The Perioperative Family-Centered Care Committee at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center was formed in November 2002 as a part of the Pursuing Perfection Grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The committee defined family-centered care in the Perioperative Area. The committee addresses issues that will impact meeting the objective of providing optimal family-centered care during the perioperative experience. The committee provides education and support to the Perioperative Team.

Family-Centered Care Initiatives

"Our Promises to You” are posted in every room so families know what to expect from the Perioperative healthcare team. The educational materials given to families prior to their surgical procedure help prepare them for the day of surgery. This group continually works on improving this information so families have the best experience possible when they bring their child for a surgical procedure.

Cooper Survey Tool

The Cooper Survey is one tool used to identify trends of concerns. With the assistane of the Perioperative Family-Centered Care Committee, Perioperative process improvement teams recommend and implement the necessary changes. One example is in the notification of delays in the surgical suites. The Perioperative Family-Centered Care Commitee recommended that signs be placed in all of the patient rooms asking families to call for updates on their child’s surgical time if they had not left for the operating room at the time they were scheduled.

Discharge folders and individualized discharge instructions were initiated based on the feedback received from the Perioperative Family-Centered Care Committee. A "Care Booklet" was developed by this group and is now given to all new employees. The "Care Booklet" focuses on the behaviors that support family-centered care.
