Frequently Asked Questions about the Educational Family-Centered Rounds Videos

The staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center created a series of educational videos (see facilitator guide) that illustrate family-centered rounds and educate staff about how to conduct these types of rounds. These videos have become great learning tools for spreading the philosophy of family-centered rounds to other hospitals.

Below are some answers to frequently asked questions about the educational family-centered rounds videos:

Why were the videos created?

One of the most common barriers to implementing family-centered rounds seems to be that physicians are not able to observe another hospital practicing family-centered rounds. Observing family-centered rounds through the video vignettes may help others learn how to implement them.

Are the videos "how to" videos that show us how to incorporate family-centered rounds within our hospital?

The video vignettes do not work well on their own as a "how to" type video. We recommend that a group of people watch the videos together and discuss the vignettes. Watch the videos in a group to stimulate valuable discussion among providers about the perceived benefits and obstacles of partnering with families on rounds as well as specifics on how to do them. No performance depicted in the videos is perfect. Rather, the vignettes are intended to stimulate group discussion of what went well and what could have been done better. While somewhat dramatized, the videos capture many common mistakes made by teams new to the process of family-centered rounds.

Can my organization use the videos created by Cincinnati Children's in a training program or post them on our organization's web site?

We have no problems with an organization using the videos in training as long as Cincinnati Children's is cited.

Since the videos are available through this web site, you can direct people to view the videos and accompanying information our facilitator guide.
