Implementing Family-Centered Rounds

Preparation for Family-Centered Rounds Workshop

This section of the web site was created to help you and your colleagues explore family-centered rounds and discover how to implement them in your hospital. This material is intended to be reviewed and discussed by a group. Please take a few minutes to review the information below.

After you have reviewed this information and are prepared to hold a workshop with your colleagues, return to this area of our web site to begin discovering how to implement family-centered rounds at your hospital.

Invite the Appropriate People

Family-centered rounds involve physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, parents and patients. To learn the most from the videos and have a meaningful discussion about implementing family-centered rounds in your hospital, invite physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. Including nurses and allied health professionals will help physicians learn their perspective. Since Cincinnati Children's is a medical center dedicated to the care of children, we try to involve parents as much as possible. We included parents in some of our discussion about family-centered rounds, and you may decide to include parents as well.

The workshop provides everyone an opportunity to discuss benefits and obstacles that may occur with family-centered rounds. If people from different disciplines discuss the potential obstacles, everyone can work together to decide ways to overcome the obstacles. Inviting a variety of professionals to a workshop also gives you an opportunity to find out who is enthusiastic about embracing family-centered rounds and who is reluctant to consider family-centered rounds. Find your key professionals who want to implement family-centered rounds and get them involved.

Ideally, invite a minimum of five and a maximum of 25 people to the workshop. Depending on the size of your group, you may decide to break the large group into smaller groups to discuss each video. Try to create an atmosphere where everyone is wiling to participate and ask questions.

Find an Ideal Location

Technically, each person could review the videos from his or her computer; however, you will benefit more if everyone gets together to watch and discuss the videos. Find a room that will comfortably seat your audience and allow you to break into smaller groups. Try to get a descent sized screen so the videos from our web site can be projected for all to see. Gather a few flipcharts and bright markers so small groups can write their potential barriers and potential benefits for everyone to discuss.

Review Our Family-Centered Rounds Workshop Information

Spend an hour reviewing the workshop information on the family-centered rounds site. This presentation will help you lead the workshop but feel free to tailor it to meet your needs. Spend time focusing on the objectives for your hospital's workshop.

If you want to embrace a plan to implement family-centered rounds on one floor on one day with a couple of physicians and nurses, be prepared to suggest the idea at the end of the workshop.
