Adverse Drug Events (ADEs)

Adverse Drug Events Per 1,000 Doses

The staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is committed to reducing the number of adverse drug events (ADEs).

Children pose special challenges in the drug ordering and delivery process because most medication doses are ordered by the weight of the child.

Cincinnati Children's uses Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE)as a way to decrease the likelihood that an adverse drug event will occur.

CPOE significantly reduces the chance of error due to illegible handwriting because all medications are typed. Decision support features also recognize wrong drug names, doses and routes of administration, prompting doctors and pharmacists to recognize and correct medication orders before an error can occur.
