Fight to Eliminate Rotavirus
Children affected, and families who care for their affected child(ren), suffer pain and anxiety during the experience according to recent research released at the October 2005 American Academy of Pediatrics conference. Children will contract the rotavirus infection at least once before age five. Worldwide, rotavirus infection causes more than unpleasant diarrhea and vomiting, it leads to 600,000 deaths annually. The World Health Organization calls it one of the leading infectious disease killers in the world. According to the report, it also accounts for more than $1 billion in direct and indirect costs annually.
In July 2004, Mexico became the first country in the world to approve a rotavirus vaccine which was tested at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
