The Center's for Disease Control state that young children and teens are at greatest risk of drowning. Children under 5 and adolescents between the ages of 15 and 24 have the highest drowning rates. In fact, a swimming pool is 14 times more likely than a motor vehicle to be involved in the death of a child under the age 4. After three drownings, or near drownings, in the Cincinnati area during the week of May 6 and because National Water Safety Week begins June 5, this expert at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center encourages parents or care providers to use caution when children are around water:

Wendy Pomerantz, MD, MS, has an interest in injury and poison prevention as an emergency medicine physician at Cincinnati Children's. She also serves as co-director of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids in Greater Cincinnati, based at Cincinnati Children's. As a member of American Academy of Pediatrics State of Ohio Committee of Injury and Poison Prevention, she represented a temporary commission of the State of Ohio to study how to prevent traumatic injuries. She is a member of the Ohio Emergency Medical Services Board, the American Red Cross Medical Assistance Team and the Greater Cincinnati Safe Kids Coalition.
