Postponing Sexual Involvement Program Seeks Mature Teen Leaders
CINCINNATI -- Children's Hospital Medical Center is looking for teen leaders for its Postponing Sexual Involvement (PSI) program, a nationally recognized effort to reduce teen parenthood.
Teen leaders must be between the ages of 15 and 18 and attend Cincinnati Public High Schools in the 1999-2000 academic year. Teen leaders are paid to teach 6th and 7th graders how to cope with and resist pressures to have sex.
"PSI really works best when committed teen leaders teach lively classroom lessons to their younger peers," says Chris Kraus, J.D., PSI coordinator. "Teen leaders must be able to speak persuasively to peers, understand pressures for early parenthood, and translate abstract concepts about good health into concrete techniques for dealing with peers on sexual matters."
PSI, a United Way agency, is a collaborative effort between Cincinnati Children's and the Cincinnati Public Schools. The program reaches about 4,000 Cincinnati Public School students each year. Since 1993, there has been a 27 percent decline in births to young teens in Cincinnati, in part due to the contributions of programs such as PSI, according to Kraus.
Applications for PSI teen leader positions are available from Cincinnati Public High Schools or by calling the PSI office at 513-872-8948. Applicants must be academically eligible.
