Speech and Hearing Month Focus is Early Intervention Community Hotline is May 22, 1999

CINCINNATI -- During Better Hearing and Speech Month this May, it's important for parents to realize that it's possible to test the hearing of children of all ages -- even newborns. Early identification and proper treatment of a hearing or speech/language disorder is the key to successful development of that child's speech and language skills.


As a service to the community during May, Cincinnati Children's Audiology and Speech Departments will staff a hotline from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 22. If you have questions regarding your child's hearing or speech/language development, call 513-636-4341.


How can you tell if your child has a hearing or speech/language disorder? Here are some signs to look for:



  • Hearing -- Infant does not startle to loud sounds;


  • Young toddler does not respond to sounds in the environment or is unable to follow short commands;


  • Older toddler has delayed speech and language skills or is unable to follow commandsSpeech;


  • Child does not use single words by 18 months;


  • Child does not use two-word utterances by 2 years;


  • Child's speech is unintelligible at 3 years;


  • Sentence structure is short and defective at 4 years.
