April 19, 2000 - Department of Pediatrics Earns National Recognition From U.S. News & World Report
CINCINNATI -- The Department of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center has been ranked among the top five pediatric programs at medical schools in the United States.
The Department of Pediatrics consists entirely of staff members of Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati, one of the nation's leading pediatric research and teaching institutions. The department consists of Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati in-house physicians, researchers and other individuals who hold academic appointments at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
The fifth-place ranking, based on a survey of medical school deans and senior faculty, is found in U.S. News & World Report's 2001 annual guide to America's best graduate schools.
The Department of Pediatrics trails only Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Washington. It comes in ahead of such prestigious institutions as the University of California-San Francisco; Washington University in St. Louis; Baylor College of Medicine; Duke University; and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
The Department of Pediatrics is chaired by Thomas Boat, M.D., who also directs the Children's Hospital Research Foundation. The Children's Hospital Research Foundation, which is the umbrella organization under which the Department of Pediatrics falls, ranks third nationally among pediatric institutions in funding from the National Institutes of Health.
In 1993, when Dr. Boat joined Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati, the Department of Pediatrics included 144 faculty, with total external grant funding of less than $20 million. Today, the department includes more than 250 full- and part-time faculty. Total sponsored program awards now exceed $46 million. In addition, 13 new division chiefs have been appointed since 1993 and eight new divisions or programs have been created.
