Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati to Become One of World's Largest

CINCINNATI -- Christopher Wylie, Ph.D., has joined Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati's research faculty as the new director of the Developmental Biology Division. His wife and research colleague, Janet Heasman, Ph.D., joined the division as professors.

This husband-and-wife team is internationally known for its research on early vertebrate embryos. They were recruited as part of a long-term plan for Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati to become the premier center for basic research in developmental biology. Dr. Wylie will expand the division from 11 to more than 20 faculty members, making Cincinnati Children's one of the largest developmental biology centers in the world. The expanded program will dramatically enhance the amount and scope of basic research performed here.

Developmental biology is the study of the genetic, cellular and molecular bases of embryonic development. The basic questions of developmental biology are: How are the tissues and organs of children formed? How can these processes go awry? And how can errors in development be prevented or corrected?

Dr. Wylie spent his childhood in Africa and was educated in England. He comes to Cincinnati Children's from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, where he was director of the Developmental Genetics Center. He is the founding editor of Development, the leading international journal in this field, and has served as the journal's editor since 1987.

"The division's exciting growth in the months and years ahead will create a center of excellence in developmental biology that will make major contributions toward answering fundamental questions relating to normal and abnormal development and will impact health care for future generations of children," says Dr. Wylie.

Dr. Wylie is the first to hold the William K. Schubert Chair of Pediatric Research, honoring former Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati of Cincinnati president William K. Schubert, M.D.
