Philip Walson, M.D., to Direct New Office of Clinical Trials at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati
CINCINNATI -- Philip Walson, M.D., has joined Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati as director of the new Office of Clinical Trials. In this capacity, Dr. Walson will:
- Serve as the administrative coordinator for all clinical trials at Cincinnati Children's Hosptial Medical Center. He will work closely with all other units involved in clinical trials at the medical center.
- Market Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati as a location for clinical research funded by industry as well as federal and other non-profit sources.
- Expand the number of faculty engaged in clinical trials and provide training in methodology to faculty, fellows and staff.
- Help investigators plan and conduct trials. These services may include help with contracting, budgeting, preparing the application for Institutional Review Board approval, identifying and recruiting study participants, and meeting regulatory agency guidelines.
"It is unethical not to do studies in children," says Dr. Walson. "Children have a right to the advances of medicine. Yet, it is tougher and ethically more complex to involve children in human studies; you have to understand the dangers. We're dedicated to making sure children are not a commodity." Recent federal regulations requiring drugs to be tested in children have resulted in an increase in the number of pediatric clinical trials nationally.
These trials are sponsored by government agencies and private industry. Dr. Walson says Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati will concentrate its efforts on treatments that offer hope for important pediatric conditions.
Dr. Walson comes to Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati from Columbus Children's Hospital, where he was professor of Pediatrics, Pharmacology and Pharmacy, and head of the division of Clinical Pharmacology/Toxicology and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring.
Dr. Walson earned an M.D. at the University of California at San Francisco, completed his pediatric residency at Wyler Children's Hospital, University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, and then returned to the University of California at San Francisco for a two-year fellowship in clinical pharmacology at the Cardiovascular Research Institute, department of Internal Medicine. He was head of the Pediatric Pharmacology Research Unit (PPRU) in Columbus before coming to Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati.
Last year, Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati established a Pediatric Pharmacology Research Unit, directed by Randy Sallee, M.D., Ph.D. This unit is one of 13 government-funded PPRUs across the country that together form a network of research centers for federally sponsored pharmacology studies.
Dr. Walson's office will work closely with the Pediatric Pharmacology Research Unit, Clinical Research Center, Biostatistics Program, Imaging Research Center, Gamble Program for Clinical Studies, and other units involved in clinical trials.
