August 17, 2000 - Firstar Donation will Further Brain Injury Rehabilitation at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati
CINCINNATI -- A donation of $25,000 from Firstar Bank for the second annual Circle of Life Awards Dinner will allow Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati to establish new vocational education programs to aid in the transition from patient to productive worker when a young adult is ready to enter or re-enter the workforce after sustaining a traumatic brain injury. This support will enable the Pediatric Rehabilitation Division to better serve infants, children and adolescents who suffer from traumatic brain injuries.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics show that, each year, traumatic brain injury affects more than two million Americans and claims over 50,000 lives. Of this number, over 1 million of injured individuals are children, with 30,000 suffering permanent disabilities.
Last year, funding from the first annual Circle of Life Awards Dinner allowed Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati Pediatric Rehabilitation to expand its community and school reentry program. A new school intervention coordinator now leads patients, families and educators through the transition back into familiar environments with unfamiliar issues. The dinner this year will honor Manual Mayerson for his work with Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati and many other community organizations that assist children and adults with disabilities.
The Circle of Life is a community organization that supports Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati Pediatric Rehabilitation Division to enhance the quality of life for children, young adults and families whose lives have been changed by brain injury.
Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati is a 300-bed clinical, academic and research facility. Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati consistently ranks as one of the country's top 10 pediatric hospitals.
