February 22, 2001 - Nurse at Cincinnati Children's is Health Care Hero
CINCINNATI -- Jean Giver, RN, a nurse in the Cardiology Division at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati, has been named a finalist in the "Provider" category for a 2001 Health Care Heroes Award.
The Business Courier created the awards in 1998 to celebrate excellence in the healthcare industry. The awards honor people who have made an impact on healthcare in the community through their concern for patients, research and inventions, management skills, or service to the poor and uninsured.
Giver earned her degree from the school of nursing at Deaconess Hospital in 1976 Before graduating, she began working as a nursing technician at Cincinnati Children's. After earning her nursing degree, she continued to work at Cincinnati Children's. In 1980, she moved to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and in 1992, to the cardiac catheterization lab. She currently works in Cardiology's outpatient clinic.
"I've wanted to be a nurse my entire life," Giver told the Business Courier "You get very close with the patients, and you get to know them as a family, and you see how having a child who has a severe heart problem impacts that family. My goal is to make their visits with us in the clinic as painless as possible."
Giver was nominated for the award by several families, including Tony and Julie Balzano, who have had two children with heart defects. Their daughter, Maria, died at the age of 5 months, and had frequently been under Giver's care when she was hospitalized. Their son, Matthew, also has a heart defect and is being treated at Cincinnati Children's.
