Department of Pediatrics Earns National Recognition From U.S. News & World Report
CINCINNATI -- The Department of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center has been ranked among the top 10 pediatric programs at medical schools in the United States.
The Department of Pediatrics consists entirely of staff members of Cincinnati Children's, one of the nation's leading pediatric research and teaching institutions. The department consists of Cincinnati Children's in-house physicians, researchers and other individuals who hold academic appointments at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
The sixth-place ranking, based on a survey of medical school deans and senior faculty, is found in U.S. News & World Report's annual guide to America's best graduate schools.
The Department of Pediatrics trails only Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Washington, and the University of California -- San Francisco. It is the only one of the top six programs not on either the East or West coast. In addition, it comes in ahead of such prestigious institutions as Washington University in St. Louis, Yale University, Duke University and Stanford University.
The Department of Pediatrics is chaired by Thomas Boat, MD, who also directs the Children's Hospital Research Foundation. The Research Foundation, which is the umbrella organization under which the Department of Pediatrics falls, ranks third nationally among pediatric institutions in funding from the National Institutes of Health.
In 1993, when Dr. Boat joined Cincinnati Children's, the Department of Pediatrics included 144 faculty, with total external grant funding of less than $20 million. As of Dec. 31, 2000, the department included more than 250 full- and part-time faculty, and total sponsored program awards exceeded $56 million.
