Eastside Moms Give the Gift of Hearing to Area Children

CINCINNATI -- Eastside Moms, an organization based on the east side of Cincinnati, held a fundraiser at the Ivy League Country Club to benefit Audiology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. The organization's charity event included a wine tasting and silent auction. Money raised from the events will purchase hearing aids for hearing-impaired children.

Eastside Moms is a support group that meets monthly to discuss current issues with raising children. Every other year, the organization chooses a fundraising campaign specific to the needs of a member. Co-chairs of this year's campaign include Ceci David, James Schmerge and Sara Tower.

"My daughter is losing her ability to hear," says Mrs. Tower. "I realize how hard hearing loss is on children and encouraged the group to support the initiative to purchase additional hearing aids for Cincinnati Children's Audiology department."

"Parents are very anxious to receive their child's hearing aids after their child's diagnosis of hearing impairment," replies Gayle Riemer, M.A., C.C.C.-A., clinical director for Audiology. "Cincinnati Children's Audiology department currently has a loaner bank of hearing aids for children who are awaiting third party funding, which can take up to three months. Thanks to the Eastside Moms, we were able to purchase additional hearing aids for this loaner bank to provide the gift of hearing to more pediatric patients."

The Audiology Department at Cincinnati Children's offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient services for children of all ages. The staff is comprised of 24 certified audiologists. Consultation with physicians and other health professionals, school personnel and those involved in hearing aid fittings ensures that the total hearing health care of each child is addressed.
