U.S. News Names Cincinnati Children's One of Top 10 Pediatric Hospitals in the United States

CINCINNATI -- Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati has been named one of the 10 best pediatric hospitals in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report's annual "America's Best Hospitals" survey.

The 12th annual survey, released today, ranks Cincinnati Children's 10th among pediatric institutions throughout the nation. It is one of only two pediatric institutions in the midwest to be included in the top 10.

The ranking was based on reputational surveys. To determine the rankings, U.S. News asked 150 board-certified pediatricians at random to name up to five hospitals they consider tops in their specialty regardless of cost or location. The reputational score shows the percentage of doctors surveyed over the past three years who named a hospital. Cincinnati Children's reputational score was 8.9 percent, less than three percentage points below what would have put Cincinnati Children's in the top five.

U.S. News established the "America's Best Hospitals" survey to be a starting point to help consumers find quality care.

"Our representation among the top ten children's hospitals confirms we are on the path toward achieving our vision of becoming the leader in improving child health," says James M. Anderson, president and chief executive officer of Cincinnati Children's.

The volume and complexity of services that Cincinnati Children's provides, as well as the quality of care it offers, place the medical center among the leading facilities in the nation.

According to the most recent national data published by the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions, Cincinnati Children's ranks second in number of surgical procedures, second in number of emergency visits, third in number of outpatient visits and fourth in number of admissions.

Services provided range from well-child to specialized medical, surgical and rehabilitative services, and include the only Level I pediatric trauma center in the area.

The survey is not the first by U.S. News this year in which Cincinnati Children's ranked among the nation's medical best. In April, U.S. News ranked the Department of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center among the top 10 pediatric programs at medical schools in the United States.

The Department of Pediatrics consists entirely of staff members of Cincinnati Children's and consists of Cincinnati Children's in-house physicians, researchers and other individuals who hold academic appointments at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

The sixth-place ranking, based on a survey of medical school deans and senior faculty, was found in U.S. News & World Report's annual guide to America's best graduate schools.
