Alvin Crawford, MD, Awarded in France for Work in Orthopaedics
CINCINNATI -- Alvin H. Crawford, MD, director of Orthopaedics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, was the Presidential guest speaker at GEOP – Group Etiole Orthopedics and Pediatrics (the French pediatric orthopaedic society) in November in Paris. He presented an update on "The Musculoskeletal Problems in Neurofibromatosis in the Pediatric Patient"and was awarded the society's annual GEOP medal for his work in neurofibromatosis in children.
Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disease characterized by multiple skin tumors and sometimes physical deformity. Dr. Crawford is considered the leading orthopaedic expert on neurofibromatosis in children, a field in which he has achieved internationally renowned status.
At the concurrent 77th Annual Meeting of SOFCOT – Societe Francaise de Chirurgie Orthopedique et Traumatologique, Dr. Crawford was awarded the French Orthopaedic Society's International Medal for his pioneering work in "Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery in Children." Dr. Crawford is an international leader in performing endoscopic spinal surgery in children and adolescents.
Dr. Crawford earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry and biochemistry at the Tennessee A and I University in 1960, with a minor in music. He earned his medical degree at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1964. In 2000, Dr. Crawford was elected the Neurofibromatosis, Inc., Scholar for the year. He was also named one of the Best Doctors in America for 2000 and 2001. His publications include more than 200 articles and abstracts, four books and 52 chapters.
