Grant to Provide Education and Mental Health Treatment Services

CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has received a multi-year, $750,000 grant from The Spaulding Foundation to help provide educational and outpatient treatment services for children and adolescents at Cincinnati Children's College Hill campus.

The College Hill site, which formerly housed Emerson North hospital and Phoenix International, will be used as a psychiatric treatment center for children and adolescents, ages 10 to 16. It is expected to open in December 2002.

The funding will be used to provide computers for eight classrooms, building renovations and furniture and supplies for the campus's school facility. The classrooms will be used by 85 percent of the children and adolescents who receive services at College Hill. The educational program will enable students to pursue education and training past their high school years. The school program will include teachers from the Cincinnati Public Schools and individualized educational services for all students.

The funding also will be applied for computers, renovations and furnishings for the outpatient wing of the College Hill campus. As has been widely reported, there is a severe shortage of psychiatric treatment options in Greater Cincinnati. Pediatric healthcare providers consistently report they cannot find caregivers or agencies for their patients who require mental health care.

Cincinnati Children's outpatient mental health visits have grown from 4,000 to 10,000 a year in a two-year span. The new outpatient wing will support 17 offices dedicated to providing individual, family and group therapy services, reducing the wait time for children and adolescents to receive mental health care.

The Spaulding Foundation was established by the late Ruth Spaulding, who was a former resident of Cincinnati. Her estate funded the private foundation. The Spaulding Foundation is dedicated to improving quality of life in the community, focusing on support for service in education, health and human services, with a strong commitment to mental health services and programs for chemical addiction.
