We're One of Top 10 Pediatric Hospitals in United States
CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center has been named one of the 10 best pediatric hospitals in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual "America’s Best Hospitals" survey.
The 13th annual survey, released today, ranks Cincinnati Children’s 9th in pediatric care, an improvement over last year’s 10th place ranking.
Among institutions offering pediatric care, Cincinnati Children’s was ranked ahead of such prestigious organizations as Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, the University of California San Francisco, and UCLA.
To determine the rankings, U.S. News asked 180 board-certified pediatricians at random to name up to five hospitals they consider tops in their specialty regardless of cost or location. The reputational score shows the percentage of doctors surveyed over the past three years who named a hospital.
The Cincinnati Children’s reputational score was 10.2 percent, an increase over last year’s 8.9 percent score. "Our representation among the top ten children’s hospitals, and our improvement over last year’s top 10 score, confirms we are making progress toward achieving our vision of becoming the leader in improving child health," says James M. Anderson, president and chief executive officer of Cincinnati Children’s.
U.S. News established the "America’s Best Hospitals" survey to be a starting point to help consumers find quality care. The publication ranks 205 top medical centers in 17 specialties.
"These hospitals excel partly because their doctors perform large numbers of tricky and risky procedures," according to U.S. News. "Study piled upon study has shown the critical role of volume. Ranked hospitals tend to adhere more closely to advanced treatment guidelines, to incorporate new findings into patient care, and to conduct research that gives desperately ill patients more options."
The volume and complexity of services that Cincinnati Children’s provides, as well as the quality of care it offers, place the medical center among the leading facilities in the nation. According to the most recent national data published by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, Cincinnati Children’s ranks second in number of surgical procedures, second in number of emergency visits, third in number of outpatient visits and fourth in number of admissions. Services provided range from well child to specialized medical, surgical and rehabilitative services, and include the only Level I pediatric trauma center in the area.
The survey is not the first by U.S. News this year in which Cincinnati Children’s ranked among the nation’s medical best. Earlier this year, U.S. News ranked the department of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center the fourth best pediatric program at a medical school in the United States, behind only Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University.
The fourth-place ranking, based on a survey of medical school deans and senior faculty, was found in the U.S. News & World Report annual guide to America’s best graduate schools. Last year, the department of pediatrics was ranked sixth.
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is a 426-bed institution dedicated to the pursuit of perfect healthcare. It is the only pediatric organization in the United States to receive the prestigious Pursuing Perfection grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation ranks third nationally among all pediatric centers in research grants from the National Institutes of Health. The Cincinnati Children’s vision is to be the leader in improving child health, through patient care, research and education.
