April 10, 2003 - Department of Pediatrics Earns National Recognition: Ranked Among Top 5 Pediatric Programs at Medical Schools
CINCINNATI -- The department of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center has been ranked among the top five pediatric programs at medical schools in the United States.
The U.S. News & World Report annual guide to America's best graduate schools ranks the department of pediatrics as the fourth best in the nation, behind only Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University. The ranking is based on a survey of medical school deans and senior faculty.
"This ranking speaks to the quality of faculty in the department of pediatrics and their tremendous productivity," says Thomas Boat, MD, who chairs the department and also directs The Children's Hospital Research Foundation. The Research Foundation, which is the umbrella organization under which the department of pediatrics falls, ranks third nationally among pediatric institutions in funding from the National Institutes of Health.
The department of pediatrics consists of Cincinnati Children's in-house physicians, researchers and other individuals who hold academic appointments at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
"We have many of the best pediatricians to be found anywhere in our department -- both experienced leaders and young, creative caregivers, teachers and investigators" says Dr. Boat. "The pediatric faculty also benefit from the unflagging support offered by Cincinnati Children's and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine."
The department of pediatrics is the only one of the top five programs not on either the East or West coast. In addition, it comes in ahead of such prestigious institutions as the University of California -- San Francisco, University of Washington, Washington University in St. Louis and UCLA.
In 1993, when Dr. Boat joined Cincinnati Children's and the College of Medicine, the department of pediatrics included 144 faculty, with total external grant funding of less than $20 million. As of June 30, 2002, the department included 354 full- and part-time faculty, and total sponsored program awards exceeded $90 million.
U.S News & World Report also regularly ranks Cincinnati Children's among the 10 best pediatric hospitals in the United States. In the most current survey, released last year, the magazine ranked Cincinnati Children's 9th in pediatric care.
