Thomas Boat, MD, Earns Geme Leadership Award

CINCINNATI -- Thomas F. Boat, MD, director of the Department of Pediatrics and of the Children's Hospital Research Foundation at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, will receive the Joseph W. St. Geme, Jr., Leadership Award on Sunday May 4 at the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in Seattle.

This award was established to honor the life, work and memory of Joseph St. Geme, Jr., and to memorialize his many contributions and his aspirations for pediatrics. The award honors individuals for accomplishments as a role model, one who has broadly contributed to the development of pediatrics over many years and who has created a future for pediatrics. The first award was presented in 1988.

The award is presented by the Federation of Pediatric Organizations on behalf of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Board of Pediatrics, American Pediatric Society, Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairmen, Association of Pediatric Program Directors and the Society for Pediatric Research.

A pediatric pulmonologist by training, Dr. Boat has worked throughout his career to define the pathophysiology of airway dysfunction and more effective therapies for chronic lung diseases of childhood, such as cystic fibrosis. He also is physician-in-chief and a member of the board of trustees of Cincinnati Children's.

Dr. Boat joined Cincinnati Children's in 1993, after serving as chairman of the department of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Previously, he was co-director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland.

U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the Department of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's among the top four pediatric training programs at medical schools in the United States. The department includes more than 300 full- and part-time faculty. Total sponsored program awards exceed $90 million.

Dr. Boat is a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He has served as a member and chair of the Biochemistry II Study Section of the National Institutes of Health, and as a council member of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. He chairs the Research Development Program Advisory Committee for the National Cystic Fibrosis Association and is a member of their Medical Advisory Committee. He has been chair of the American Board of Pediatrics and president of the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs. Dr. Boat is immediate past president of the American Pediatric Society.
