US News Names Cincinnati Children's One of Top Ten Pediatric Hospitals

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has been named one of the 10 best pediatric hospitals in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report's annual "America's Best Hospitals" survey.

Cincinnati Children's ranks 8th in pediatric care. This represents an improvement in the U.S News survey for the third consecutive year. Cincinnati Children's ranked 9th in 2002 and 10th in 2001.

In addition, the Cincinnati Children's reputational score was 12.9 percent, an increase over the 10.2 percent score in 2002 and the 8.9 percent score in 2001. The reputational score shows the percentage of doctors surveyed over the past three years who named a hospital.

"Our representation among the top ten children's hospitals, and our improvement over previous year's top 10 scores, confirms that our reputation for quality care is becoming more widely known among physicians throughout the country," says James M. Anderson, president and chief executive officer of Cincinnati Children's.

To determine the rankings, U.S. News asked 150 board-certified physicians at random to name up to five hospitals they consider tops in their specialty regardless of cost or location.

Among institutions offering pediatric care, Cincinnati Children's was ranked ahead of such prestigious organizations as Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Children's Hospital Denver, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, the University of California San Francisco, and UCLA.

U.S. News & World Report established the "America's Best Hospitals" survey to be a starting point to help consumers find quality care. The publication ranks 203 top medical centers in 17 specialties.

"These medical centers excel for good reasons," according to U.S. News & World Report. "For one, their doctors perform large numbers of tricky and risky procedures, and study after study shows that practice counts. The best hospitals, moreover, tend to adhere more closely to advanced treatment guidelines, to incorporate new findings into patient care, and to conduct research that gives desperately ill patients additional options."

The volume and complexity of services that Cincinnati Children's provides, as well as the quality of care it offers, place the medical center among the leading facilities in the nation.

According to the most recent national data published by the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions, Cincinnati Children's ranks second in number of surgical procedures, second in number of emergency visits, third in number of outpatient visits and fourth in number of admissions.

Services provided range from well child to specialized medical, surgical and rehabilitative services, and include the only Level I pediatric trauma center in the area.

The survey is not the first by U.S. News & World Report this year in which Cincinnati Children's ranked among the nation's medical best. Earlier this year, U.S. News ranked the department of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center the fourth best pediatric program at a medical school in the United States, behind only Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University.

The fourth-place ranking, based on a survey of medical school deans and senior faculty, was found in the U.S. News & World Report annual guide to America's best graduate schools.

Cincinnati Children's is a 373-bed institution dedicated to the pursuit of perfect healthcare. It is the only pediatric organization in the United States to receive the prestigious Pursuing Perfection grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation ranks third nationally among all pediatric centers in research grants from the National Institutes of Health. The Cincinnati Children's vision is to be the leader in improving child health.
