Department of Pediatrics Earns National Recognition From U.S. News & World Report

The Department of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center has again been ranked among the top five pediatric programs at medical schools in the United States.

The U.S. News & World Report annual guide to America's best graduate schools ranks the Department of Pediatrics as the fourth best in the nation, behind only Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania. The ranking is based on a survey of medical school deans and senior faculty.

"This ranking speaks to the quality of faculty in the department of pediatrics and their tremendous productivity," says Thomas Boat, MD, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and director of The Children's Hospital Research Foundation. The Research Foundation ranks third nationally among pediatric institutions in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The Department of Pediatrics consists of the Cincinnati Children's in-house physicians, researchers and other individuals who hold academic appointments at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

"We have many of the best pediatricians to be found anywhere in our department -- both experienced leaders and young, creative caregivers, teachers and investigators," says Dr. Boat. "The pediatric faculty also benefits from the unflagging support offered by Cincinnati Children's and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine."

In 1993, when Dr. Boat joined Cincinnati Children's and the College of Medicine, the Department of Pediatrics included 144 faculty, with total external grant funding of less than $20 million. As of June 30, 2003, the department included 338 faculty. Total sponsored program awards exceeded $98 million, more than $72 million of which came from the NIH.

U.S News & World Report also regularly ranks Cincinnati Children's among the 10 best pediatric hospitals in the United States. In the most current survey, released last year, the magazine ranked Cincinnati Children's 8th in pediatric care.
