Helpful Information for Families
Patient Stories
Read about Alex's journey with bariatric surgery: "I did this to get healthy; weight loss was a perk."
"I can't ride the roller coasters at the amusement park. ... I can't play sports with my friends because I can't keep up." These are just some of the things patients have said after coming to the Surgical Weight Loss Program for Teens at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Not only does being overweight cause additional health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure, it also keeps you from enjoying life to its fullest.
Our Surgical Weight Loss team understands your unique needs and the significant impact that obesity can have on your life. Choosing to have weight loss surgery is a difficult, life-changing decision, especially when you're in your teens or a young adult.
We are here to help you through the process. That's why we offer a complete online resource to help you make a confident, informed decision with your family.
Our comprehensive program includes long-term after care and emotional support. Patients and their families are counseled and closely followed within a clinical setting, which is designed to meet the psychosocial, emotional and medical needs of overweight adolescents.
Our Philosophy
The guiding principle of the Weight Loss Surgery Program team is that bariatric surgery for teens should not occur in isolation, but in an environment that meets the unique physical, medical, behavioral, psychosocial and emotional needs of adolescents and their families.
We consider surgery a last resort for the treatment of severely obese teens.
Our surgical director is Thomas Inge, MD, PhD, our medical director is Stavra A. Xanthakos, MD, MS, and our associate surgical director is Victor F. Garcia, MD.
