Biography

Catherine Krawczeski, MD, focuses her research on clinical outcomes after pediatric cardiac surgery. She has a particular interest in the effects of cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass on the kidney. Dr. Krawczeski's experience as a clinical investigator has been strengthened by my collaboration with Prasad Devarajan, director of the division of Nephrology, translating biomarker technology to the bedside for early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) after cardiopulmonary bypass. Their successful discovery and validation of early AKI biomarkers, such as NGAL, has set the stage for future studies of potential therapeutic interventions. Dr. Krawczeski and Dr. Devarajan have enjoyed a very successful collaboration, which has resulted in over 15 peer-reviewed publications and in intramural and national (AHA and NIH) grant funding. Based upon this success, they have also been part of a multi-center AKI consortium, studying the incidence of AKI after CPB, the application and validation of biomarker technology to the bedside, and evaluating the long-term effects of AKI on morbidity and quality of life. Their collaboration has been further strengthened by the recent creation of the Center for Acute Care Nephrology (CACN), a joint effort by the Heart Institute and the division of Nephrology (Director Goldstein; Co-Director Krawczeski), for the purpose of concentrating and coordinating clinical care and single- and multi-center AKI translational and clinical research.
