Biography

Peter B. Manning, MD, is director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.  Dr. Manning's main interests include cardiac surgery in infants and methods to minimize the need for blood product transfusion related to open-heart surgery in children. In collaboration with Michael Rutter, MD of our Otorhinolaryngology Department, Dr. Manning has performed more tracheal reconstructions in children than any center in the world. 

Dr. Manning is a leading advocate for a multidisciplinary, team approach to the management of children with heart disorders, the approach taken by the Heart Institute.  Dr. Manning joined Cincinnati Children's in 1996 from Kansas City, where he was chief of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Children's Mercy Hospital. 

He earned a medical degree at the University of Michigan in 1982.  Dr. Manning completed residencies in general surgery at the University of Michigan, pediatric surgery at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, cardiothoracic surgery at Bowman Grey School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC, and pediatric cardiac surgery at Children's Hospital in Boston.  Dr. Manning is board-certified in general surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, congenital cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery.  Editor, contributor and nationally recognized cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Manning, with contributions from numerous experts in the field, compiled Cincinnati Children's Heart Encyclopedia, a comprehensive online medical reference.
