Child Life Specialist

What is a typical day for a child life specialist?

A Child Life specialist plays ball with a patient.
There is no "typical" day for a child life specialist. Every day is very different.

We meet our patients and families and assess their needs for the day.

Needs could include:

  • Providing non-medical preparation to a child for a procedure or test
  • Medical play with a child using dolls, stuffed animals and medical equipment
  • Play activities with a child to promote normal development and growth
  • Providing support to siblings who are affected by a child's illness
  • Taking a family on a pre-admission hospital tour
  • Providing support for grief and bereavement concerns
