Taking Care of Your Health
The United States (U.S.) has a private fee-for-service system of health care. This means people in the U.S. pay for the health services they use. Health care is expensive so many people buy health insurance. You should get health insurance for yourself and your family as soon as possible. Health insurance is so important in the U.S. that the Department of State even requires J-1 Exchange Visitors to maintain certain amounts and types.
Health Benefits at Cincinnati Children's
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers health insurance as a benefit to our employees. There are many types of health insurance available and the cost of coverage will depend on many factors. The total cost to purchase a health plan is called the "premium."
Depending on the health plans you select, Cincinnati Children's may pay a portion of the premium. For example, Cincinnati Children's offers medical plans where Cincinnati Children's pays a major portion of the premium. Cincinnati Children's also offers a separate vision care plan where the employee pays the entire premium.
If you choose to be covered under a health care plan offered by Cincinnati Children's, your portion of the premiums will be deducted (taken out of) your biweekly paycheck. The process of enrolling in a health plan is discussed in greater detail during new hire orientation. Newly hired employees are given 30 days to submit their enrollment selection.
Paying for Health Care Services
If you have health insurance your health care providers will send their bills to your health insurance company. The health insurance company will pay for some or all of your medical services depending on the health plan you selected. Often you must pay a portion of your medical bills. This is sometimes called a "co-payment" or "co-insurance." All plans also have services they do not pay for called "exclusions." You should make sure you understand any coverage exclusions before enrolling in a plan. If needed, Cincinnati Children's benefits staff can arrange for interpreters to help you understand your plan options.
Urgent Medical Care
If you need urgent medical care, you can go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. Most hospitals are required by federal law to treat patients with a medical emergency even if the person cannot pay. Learn about Emergency Help: Call 911.
