  • Individual tutoring as well as special classes are possible.

      • 18-ESL-605, 301 "Improving Pronunciation," call number 801907, M-F 1:30-3:20 pm, focusing on discrete pronunciation skills of articulation, intonation, and stress with daily practice activities that include speech / sound analysis, dialogue generation, role-play, simulation and ethnographic assignments. (Third term begins August 8.)
      • 18-ESL-606, 301, "American Culture and Communication", call number 801915, M-F 11:30 am-1:20 pm, focusing on cultural aspects of verbal and non-verbal behavior, values and communication styles while developing effective communication patterns. (Third term begins August 8.)

Also introduces participation to expectations of American classroom culture.
    • 18-ESL-609, 301, "Introduction to Academic Writing," call number 801904, M-F 3:30 -5:20 pm, designed to introduce non-native speakers to skills to complete basic academic writing. Topics include term papers / general academic writing, topic limitation, paraphrasing, summarizing, documenting sources, revising, editing, etc.

      Goal is to improve pronunciation of vowels, consonants, stress and intonation. Focus is on increasing overall fluency, improving listening comprehension in both academic and everyday general conversation, to improve recognition and use of idiomatic English, to increase cultural awareness. Techniques include audiotapes, leading and participating in discussions and presentations, role plays, regular writing and lab assignments. (Prereq: 18-ESL-601 or placement.)

      Goal is to develop academic presentation skills necessary for teaching and presentations in professional meetings (or graduate seminars.) Learn techniques for audience analysis, selection and organization of materials, developing and supporting an argument, dealing with questions, effective oral delivery. Several videotaped oral presentations are required. (Prereq: 18-ESL-601 or permission from instructor)
