RN Residency Overview

The RN Residency offers a comfortable, exciting setting.

Meet Glenn
Glenn was excited about beginning his professional nursing career, but was worried about whether he would feel overwhelmed in his first clinical position. Hear his story.

The RN Residency in Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center was created just for you, the new nurse. It provides a comfortable, nurturing and exciting setting for a new RN graduate to begin a rewarding nursing career.

A Unique Transition Program

The RN Residency in Pediatrics is not an orientation. It is a unique transition program that prepares newly graduated RNs to be safe, competent and confident nursing professionals.

This comprehensive, on-the-job training program consists of two phases. Phase I is a training period that lasts between 16 and 36 weeks, depending on the pediatric specialty area chosen, and Phase II is an ongoing training and professional development period that lasts from the conclusion of Phase I up to one year. The program:

  • Provides a gradual, well-rounded entry into the realm of pediatric nursing with an emphasis on  expanded learning and professional development
  • Covers more than the technical aspects of nursing care
  • Emphasizes how to take care of the whole patient and family
  • Strengthens your clinical performance and increases your confidence

An Inside View of Pediatrics

All new RN graduates with less than six months of experience are required to start their career with Cincinnati Children's by participating in this program. This residency focuses on the customized care required of pediatric nurses, bridging the gap between adult-oriented nursing education and the care of pediatric patients. Adult medical / surgical nursing experience is not necessary before considering a career in pediatric nursing at Cincinnati Children's.
