Do all new RN graduates have to attend the RN Residency?

All new RN graduates with less than six months of experience are required to start their career at Cincinnati Children's by participating in this program. This program will provide you with a solid foundation as you begin your career as a pediatric nurse.

I have nine months of experience. Do I attend the RN Residency or regular orientation?

You should discuss your prior RN work experience during your interview with the department manager or director. A determination will be made as to whether the residency or regular orientation will be most beneficial to you.

Do I need to pass the NCLEX before I begin the RN Residency?

You must have a valid Ohio RN license prior to starting the residency.

What if I have a planned vacation?

Due to the structure of the program, it will not be possible for participants to take vacation during the residency. A future residency date may better accommodate your personal needs.

Do critical care units hire new graduates?

The CICU, ED, PICU, RCNIC and Operating Room hire new graduates for the RN Residency, in addition to positions available in Medical/Surgical Care and Specialty Resource Unit (rotating unit assignments). There are a limited number of new graduates that can be accommodated during each residency period.
