RN Residency in Pediatrics

RN Residency Program Schedule

The RN Residency Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center consists of two phases.

Phase I

Phase I is an orientation training period that lasts between 16 and 36 weeks, depending on the pediatric specialty area chosen.

  • One-on-one clinical training with a team of preceptors
  • Work with preceptors to manage patient assignments
  • Customized classroom education
  • Regularly scheduled Topical Seminars
  • Alternative clinical experiences outside the home unit

Phase II

Phase II is an ongoing training and professional development period that lasts from the conclusion of Phase I up to one year.

  • Function as independent professional RNs
  • Integrated into the interdisciplinary care team
  • Regularly scheduled Topical Seminars for continued learning and support

As a nurse progresses through the program, more time is spent on direct patient care as the time spent attending classes decreases. The regularly scheduled topical seminars continue throughout the program.
