Prerequisites

  1. Required readings prior to your internship: (It is suggested that one complete these readings prior to applying for the internship.)

  2. $25 application processing fee, check payable to CCHMC Child Life Internship (as of August 2009).
  3. Official transcript from college / university.
  4. Must have completed a bachelor's degree (or have completed through junior year of bachelor degree requirement) in Child Life, Child Development, Counseling, Education, Expressive Therapies, Psychology or Recreational Therapy.
  5. Must have 150 hours of experience with children. 75 hours being in a health care setting (e.g., hospital, camps for children challenged with illness, bereavement center, etc.)
  6. Three letters of reference.
  7. Personal telephone interviews will be required of top candidates as part of the application process.
  8. Required of accepted interns participating in internship program as part of a college / university curriculum:
    A. A signed contract of agreement for internship participation with your college / university or with the intern, if an independent student.
    B. Your advisor's plan for communicating with us during your internship (i.e., observations, conferences, corresondence).
    C. A copy of the evaluation forms required by your program.
    D. List of special assignments or project requirements from your school.
  9. Required of all interns accepted into the program, prior to first day of internship:
    A. Documentation of valid CPR certification by the American Red Cross.
    B. Documentation of your health insurance.
    C. Documentation of your liability insurance coverage. If you need to purchase an individual policy for student liability insurance during your internship, please contact Marsh Affinity, 1-800-621-3008, ext. 32448.

    Tell them you want student liability coverage for Therapeutic Recreation or Child Development Internship with 1 million / 3 million minimum.   10. Health requirements: Students will be in good health before beginning an internship at Cincinnati Children's and shall comply with the following standards:
    A. Each individual shall have a negative two-step tuberculin skin test by the Mantoux method PPD-S US units per test within nine months prior to date of initial clinical experience. Exceptions:
    1. Those individuals having a documented clinical record of tuberculosis and treatment with INH.
    2. Those individuals supplying a written record from a physician stating that the individual had a severe or markedly positive reaction to prior Mantoux test.
    *Individuals with exceptions must have a physician's certification that they do not have communicable tuberculous infection.
    B. Each individual must have a documented clinical record showing immunity to rubella (either a positive rubella titer or a rubella vaccination).
    C. Each individual must have a documented clinical record showing immunity to rubeola (measles). Proof of immunity can be shown by having a birth date prior to 1950, a rubeola vaccination after 1980, or with documentation of a physician stating the student has had rubeola.
    D. Each individual must have a documented clinical record showing immunity to mumps (documentation from a physician stating the student had either mumps or a mumps vaccination).
    E. Each individual must have a documented clinical record showing immunity to Hepatitis B or having started the series of three doses of Hepatitis B Vaccine (Recombivax HB or Engerix - B).
