History of the Program
The allergy / immunology fellowship dates back to 1960, when Dr. Joseph Ghory (pediatrics), Dr. Leonard Bernstein and Dr. Louis Kreindler (internal medicine) established it as a joint fellowship between University Hospital and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
The first fellow to graduate in 1962 was Dr. Robert Ausdenmoore, who is still faculty in the division. In 1977, Dr. Fischer assumed the Directorship of the Allergy / Immunology fellowship within Cincinnati Children's while Dr. Leonard Bernstein continued to direct the fellowship at University Hospital, until 1982, when Dr. David Bernstein assumed the directorship there. In 1988, Dr. Lierl became the fellowship director at Cincinnati Children's. In 1996, to optimize the educational experience, both sides agreed to join into one combined fellowship 'The University of Cincinnati Hospital Group Fellowship' with 2 tracks, pediatrics and internal medicine. At the same time, Dr. Amal Assa'ad became the fellowship director on the pediatric track and the administrative director of the fellowship. From its start in 1960 to 1995, 34 physicians graduated from the fellowship. From 1996 to 2005, under the co-directorship of Dr. Assa'ad and Dr. Bernstein, 17 fellows graduated the fellowship and there are currently 7 fellows in training. Two fellows will start training in 2006 and 2 have been recruited to start in 2007. Since 1995 the fellowship has enrolled and graduated 8 female fellows and 3 underserved minorities.
