Teaching Skills

Allergy / Immunology fellows are responsible for teaching and lecturing residents and medical students rotating through the allergy / immunology services. They also become skillful at presenting to fellow trainees and faculty clinical topics in allergy and immunology, articles in journal clubs, and research data. Patient teaching is also stressed.

There are multiple clinical, research, and scientific conferences held every week within the divisions and throughout all involved institution, providing an excellent environment for research and clinical training. The schedule of divisional rounds and conferences includes:

Fellowship conferences

Monday

Clinical Topic Review moderated by David Bernstein, MD is a one hour weekly conference based on the Allergy Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program published by the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology and the American College of Physicians. Practice parameters, recent important journal articles relevant to the topics under discussion, and important review articles are also reviewed during this time.

Cincinnati Center for Eosinophil Disorders Team Meeting organized by Marc Rothenberg,MD, PhD. This meeting is attended by fellows, faculty, and staff members of the center which includes Gastroenterology, Psychology and Pathology. At this conference, research and case presentations are discussed in an interdisciplinary setting.

Tuesday

Basic Immunology Review moderated by Nives Zimmermann, MD, Simon Hogan, PhDMarc E. Rothenberg, MD, PhD and Amal Assa'ad, MD is a one hour conference held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. The basic immunology review consist of a systematic review of the textbook, "Cellular and Molecular Immunology" by Abbas, et al.

Clinical Immunology Review moderated by Alexandra Filipovich, MDKimberly Risma, MD, PhD and Jack Bleesing, MD, PhD, Division of Hematology / Oncology is a one hour conference held on a bi-weekly basis, on alternating Tuesdays from the Basic Immunology Review conference. The conference is for a clinical immunology case discussion of relevant literature and case management.

Wednesday

Immunology Grand Rounds, moderated by J. Lawrence Houk, MD, Fred Finkelman, MD, and I. Leonard Bernstein, MD, is a combined conference attended by Allergy / Immunology, Hematology / Oncology (Immunodeficiency program), and Rheumatology / Immunology. The fellows present a case with differential diagnosis and thorough review of the pertinent literature.

Immunology Division Research Conference is moderated by David Glass, MD, Division of Rheumatology, and Fred Finkelman, MD and held on the first, third, and fifth Wednesday of each month. Fellows and faculty participate by presenting research project topics, inform others of progress in areas of research interest, and evolve ideas for developing research.

Thursday

Allergy Clinical Conference moderated by Amal Assa'ad, MD is a one hour conference held on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Thursday of each month and attended by all allergy / immunology fellows and faculty.

Presentations are given by the allergy fellows, allergy / immunology faculty and invited guest lecturers in order to cover a diverse range of topics and to provide instruction by experts in certain topics. The format is clinical allergy case presentation, journal club, allergy / immunology topic review, and a recently added research conference that is a combined presentation by a fellow and a researcher.

Friday

Immunology Journal Club, moderated by Fred Finkelman, MD, is a weekly one hour conference attended by the clinical research faculty and the fellows of the Allergy / Immunology Division at Cincinnati Children's and the Division of Immunology.

Fellows alternate as presenters with the faculty and research personnel on both tracks. Presentations highlight the background of the study, the details of the research design and methods, the validity and significance of the results, and present and discuss journal articles on basic or clinical research in the areas of allergy / immunology and Rheumatology.

Immunology Trainee Seminar is a seminar series that features research talks from trainees (students and fellows) from multiple divisions and programs.

Institutional Conferences

Other opportunities exist to attend and participate in conferences throughout the institutions involved that are relevant to allergy and immunology. A few relevant examples are provided below:

Distinguished Lecturer in Immunology Series is a one hour bi-weekly noon conference organized by Marsha Wills-Karp, PhD, Division of Immunobiology. Lecturers are given by invited national and international guest speakers. This conference provides an opportunity to exchange ideas with world-renowned experts in immunology. Frequently, during the speaker's visit to the institution, the allergy / immunology fellows meet with them for a group discussion of the speaker's research and publications. Pediatric Grand Rounds organized by Arnold W. Strauss, MD, a distinguished , Chairman of Pediatrics, and the Pediatric Chief Residents. These are held every Tuesday morning for one hour and are attended by all housestaff, faculty and interested community physicians.

FOCIS - Immunology Teaching Case Conference organized by Alexandra Filipovich, MD, Jack Bleesing, MD, PhD, and Kimberly Risma, MD, PhD. Conference is held monthly and is attended by faculty and fellows. A fellow or faculty member is designated to prepare and present patient care cases from immunology clinic.
