Research Participation

Expectations

  1. First Year
    • Become involved in a research project.
  2. Second Year
    • Identify a subspecialty area and choose a faculty mentor in that area (by the second year at the latest).
    • Use the Research Launch rotation to get a fast start on research projects (see below).
    • Begin at least one prospective and retrospective research study.
    • Submit at least one abstract to a national meeting. (Abstract deadlines: AHA -- early May; ACC -- early September)
    • Submit a grant application to the Ohio AHA (October deadline).
    • Attend either the AHA (November) or ACC (March) meeting.
  3. Third Year
    • Attend the CRC Study Design and Biostatistics Course (in the second and / or third year).
    • Submit at least two manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals during the fellowship.

Research Launch

In the first half of the second year, fellows will perform a two-month rotation. The goal of this rotation is to enable each fellow to get a rapid start in lab or clinical research.

Prior to rotation, fellows will meet with the Cardiology Research Council to identify a subspecialty focus, a mentor and an appropriate research project.

  • Molecular Cardiology
  • Preventive Cardiology / Epidemiology
  • Animal Cardiovascular Physiology / Elecrophysiology
  • Outcomes Research
  • Echocardiography
  • Cardiac Catheterization / Intervention
  • Electrophysiology
  • Cardiac Intensive Care
  • Exercise Physiology

At the end of the first and second months, fellows will meet with the Cardiology Research Council to give a research progress report and to obtain advice and guidance. The fellows will also be scheduled to present their project(s) at a Monday Research Conference.
