About Cincinnati Children's

The Critical Care Medicine Division at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers a Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Cincinnati Children's is a nationally recognized pediatric quaternary referral center, serving southern Ohio, northern Kentucky and eastern Indiana.

Cincinnati Children's is located on the clinical campus of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. All faculty members have academic appointments through the university.

The pediatric intensive care unit, a regional referral center for critically ill and injured children in the Ohio Valley, participates in arranging ground and air transportation to Cincinnati Children's. We are also a regional referral center for children with complicated respiratory failure.

A critical care transport team, based in the Emergency Department and the Critical Care Medicine Division, has been designated for the transport of these critically ill infants and children. Fellows participate in this network and are exposed to the management and development of a regional referral system.

Goal of the Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Program

The goal of the pediatric critical care fellowship program is to provide the trainee with the knowledge and clinical experience required to pursue an academic career in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.

This knowledge and experience will be acquired through bedside clinical experience, bedside teaching and didactic lecture formats. Four fundamental areas of knowledge and experience must be acquired by each trainee:

  1. Clinical expertise with all forms of critical illness and appropriate therapeutic interventions.
This is accomplished through bedside experience and attending mentorship and guidance. Directed study is facilitated through the lecture and bedside teaching formats.
  2. The development of skills in the area of medical education.
This will be accomplished by exposure to attending role models as teachers, critical commentary by faculty participating in didactic presentations organized by the trainee, and careful monitoring of trainee.
  3. Skills in the area of scientific research, including basic science and clinical investigation.
An atmosphere of critical appraisal of fundamental physiologic principles will be fostered. Each trainee will be taught how to develop a testable research hypothesis, implement proper experimental design and methodology, and organize and present the results of such study for peer review.
  4. Skills in the area of Pediatric Intesive Care Unit (PICU) administration and personnel management. Clinical responsibilities during the first year of fellowship will include eight to nine months on clinical rotation (PICU / CCU; Operating Room / Anesthesia and one month in an adult surgical ICU).
